2014 Commander Decks at The Hidden Lair

You think you know Magic the Gathering? You think yourself a master of cards? Think again.

Commander-style play offers a whole new way of playing the game. 100 card decks, no two of any single card save for basic land, and a Commander card – usually, but not always, a Planeswalker – set on the field and ready to go from the first turn. Sound interesting?

The Hidden Lair has the 2014 Commander Decks in stock and we have already taken a look through them so showcase what each of them offers.

What sort of play style are you into?

Do you want to destroy your opponents quick? Check out Built from Scratch.

Do you want fast mana to throw out the big guns early and often? Check out Guided by Nature.

Do you want to unleash the wrath of both heaven and earth, playing the game of both savior and destroyer? Check out Forged in Stone.

Are you wanting to control the graveyard, keeping your creatures out of it and putting the enemy’s in it? Check out Sworn to Darkness.

Or maybe, just maybe, you are like me and want to keep your options open. If so, then check out Peer Through Time.

Remember to come in every Friday for Friday Night Magic and you chance to earn the title of Champion of the Lair. Also be sure to put in your vote for Vote for your Favorite Teacher. Voting ends February 1st.

You can also see more of what I think about Commander-style play over at Gamemaster’s Gametable.

Commander 2014 Deck – Peer Through Time

We have had our look at Built from Scratch, Guided by Nature, Forged in Stone, and Sworn to Darkness so now it is time for us to take a look at the blue themed 2014 Commander Deck, Peer Through Time.

How does this deck play? To quote the great Jedi Master Yoda, “Control. Control. You must learn control.” With this deck, you have. You control the playing field through options. This deck is all about getting you what you need, when you need it. It has lots of options for untapping permanents, drawing extra cards, and more. Rather than control the playing field through counters, something I know a lot of MtG players get more than a little irritated with, Peer Through Time just makes sure you have absolute control of your own deck.

So lets have a look at what is inside:

  • Creatures (25): Azure Mage, Fathom Seer, Fog Bank, Willbender, Dulcet Sirens, Riptide Survivor, Sea Gate Oracle, Shaper Parasite, Reef Worm, Mulldrifter, Ixidron, Stitcher Geralf, Stormsurge Kraken, Steel Hellkite, Brine Elemental, Frost Titan, Sphinx of Jwar Isle, Sphinx of Magosi, Phyrexian Ingester, Sphinx of Uthuun, Hoverguard Sweepers, Lorthos – the Tidemaster, Artisan of Kozilek, Breaching Leviathan, Deep-sea Kraken
  • Instant (10): Pongify, Cyclonic Rift, Into the Roil, Turn to Fog, Exclude, Cackling Counterpart, Domineering Will, Dismiss, Intellectual Offering, Stroke of Genuis
  • Enchantment (3): Fool’s Demise, Infinite Reflection, Well of Ideas
  • Sorcery (7): Call to Mind, Compulsive Research, Concentrate, Rite of Replication, Rush of Knowledge, Aether Gale, Distorting Wake
  • Artifact (16): Everflowing Chalice, Tormod’s Crypt, Sol Ring, Mind Stone, Sapphire Medallion, Sky Diamond, Swiftfoot Boots, Commander’s Sphere, Crown of Doom, Unstable Obelisk, Worn Powerstone, Assault Suit, Nevinyrral’s Disk, Thran Dynamo, Ur-Golem’s Eye, Dreamstone Hedron
  • Land (38): Coral Atoll, Ghost Quarter, Lonely Sandbar, Myriad Landscape, Remote Isle, Tectonic Edge, Zoetic Cavern, Island x31
  • Planeswalker: Teferi – Temporal Archmage

The 2014 Commander Decks are in stock now. Be sure to stop into the Lair every Friday night for Friday Night Magic and your chance to become Champion of the Lair. Also remember to put in your vote for Vote for your Favorite Teacher. Voting ends February 1st.

Having already taken a look at the Built from Scratch, Guided by Nature, and Forged in Stone 2014 Commander Decks, now its time to go at little dark. Okay, a lot dark. The 2014 black commander deck is called Sworn to Darkness, and at a glance it is everything players will be looking for in a top-tier black deck.

What does it do? This deck focuses on getting a lot of mana in your pool, making sure none of your creatures stay in your graveyard for long, destroying your opponent’s creatures, and dealing with the currency that is Life Points. Its a strong deck, one you can never underestimate.

Lets have a look at its makeup:

  • Creatures (28): Skirsdag High Priest, Nantuko Shade, Vampire Hexmage, Burnished Hart, Flesh Carver, Crypt Ghast, Disciple of Bolas, Evernight Shade, Abyssal Persecutor, Liliana’s Reaver, Nekrataal, Magus of the Coffers, Raving Dead, Shriekmaw, Bloodgift Demon, Demon of Wailing Agonies, Drana – Kalastria Bloodchief, Ghoulcaller Gisa, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Morkrut Banshee, Grave Titan, Phyrexian Gargantua, Pontiff of Blight, Reaper from the Abyss, Xathrid Demon, Butcher of Malakir, Overseer of the Damned, Pestilence Demon
  • Artifacts (9): Sol Ring, Charcoal Diamond, Jet Medallion, Mind Stone, Swiftfoot Boots, Commander’s Sphere, Unstable Obelisk, Worn Powerstone, Lashwrithe
  • Enchantments (1): Bad Moon
  • Instants (8): Spoils of Blood, Tragic Slip, Malicious Affliction, Sudden Spoiling, Tendrills of Corruption, Annihilate, Skeletal Scrying, Wake the Dead
  • Sorcery (13): Sign in Blood, Read the Bones, Victimize, Syphon Mind, Dread Return, Mutilate, Infernal Offering, Aether Snap, Promise of Power, Necromatic Selection, Black Sun’s Zenith, Profane Command, Dregs of Sorrow
